Tomorrow, the 11th annual Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest Exhibition will take place, paying tribute to a journalist whose fearless work captured the raw realities of war, humanitarian crises, and human resilience. Hosted by the Russian Consulate in Cape Town, in partnership with the Independent Media Group, the exhibition serves as a platform for visual storytelling, cultural diplomacy, and the deepening of artistic exchange between Russia and South Africa.
Andrei Stenin was a Russian photojournalist whose dedication to documenting global conflicts and humanitarian crises made him one of the most respected war photographers of his generation. He began his career as a staff photographer for Rossiya Segodnya (formerly RIA Novosti), where he covered some of the most defining geopolitical events of the 21st century. Stenin’s work took him across the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe, where he captured the realities of war, displacement, and resilience. His photographs were not just about conflict, they were about people. His work consistently sought to humanise those caught in the chaos of war, focusing on their suffering, their strength, and their moments of fleeting normalcy amid destruction.
His final assignment took him to Ukraine, where he covered the war in Donetsk and Luhansk. It was here that he took some of his most powerful images, soldiers entrenched in battle, refugees fleeing their homes, and cities reduced to rubble. Tragically, it was also where he would lose his life.
On August 5, 2014, while reporting in eastern Ukraine, Stenin went missing. A month later, it was confirmed that he had been killed when his vehicle was struck during an attack near Donetsk. His death was a profound loss to the world of journalism, as he had been one of the few photographers willing to immerse himself in conflict zones to bear witness to history as it unfolded.
In the wake of his passing, Stenin was posthumously awarded Russia’s Order of Courage, recognising his bravery and commitment to journalistic integrity. His work continues to be featured in global exhibitions, reminding audiences of the risks journalists take in pursuit of truth.
To honor his legacy, the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest was established. This competition recognises young photojournalists worldwide, highlighting humanitarian and social issues through photography. Over the past decade, it has grown into a global platform for emerging talents, with participation from over 70 countries and thousands of submissions annually. The contest ensures that the values Stenin stood for truth, bravery, and storytelling, live on through new generations of journalists.

The 10th exhibition is set to be held at the Good Hope Gallery, Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, this event offers South African audiences the unique opportunity to engage with award-winning images that portray human struggles and triumphs across the globe.
