Cape Town - Today is the last day for would-be braai kings and queens in Cape Town, to enter the Capegate Braai Challenge, and be considered for a coveted place in the top 10 to battle it out in the braai pit at the shopping centre on Sunday 17th September 2022.

South Africans are known to gather around a fire or two for a chop and a chat, but the Cape Argus’ assistant editor, Quinton Mtyala is really looking forward to this event as he gets to taste the wares from the 10 fires that are going to be heating up the challenge.

The top 10 finalists competing for prizes and bragging rights in this year’s competition will be chosen from online entries, and will battle it out over two elimination rounds on the day, before the final three get down to cooking their entry signature dish.

Challengers are urged to hurry as participation consideration closes today - 31 August 2022.

All three rounds will be judged by Mtyala along with Chef and Taste Author Clement Pedro, Chef and food influencer Bas Newman who will be bringing their tastebuds to the party.

The challenge has been a staple on Capegate’s event calendar for a number of years, but in 2022, it is enhanced by taking place during the centre’s Gin and Beer festival happening 16 & 17 September.

Zoë Ganz, Marketing Manager at Capegate Shopping Centre “It has been incredible seeing how creative our braai nation is and from the looks of the entries we have received to date, competition is going to be stiff this year and our judges will have their work cut out for them, but there is still time to take in last minute entries and you never know, you could have what it takes to be the champ.”

Mtyala echoes Ganz’s sentiments saying: "The Cape Argus is proud to be associated with and celebrating South Africa's braai culture, which is more than just enjoying tasty meat over hot coals but also brings together South Africans whether in a backyard, or out in a park.

“I can’t wait to meet everyone on the 17th and taste the wares of course…"

Challengers need to head over to the Capegate Centre website to complete a digital form.

It’s simple, all that’s needed is a one line description of the signature braai dish and a short motivation as to why they should be short-listed and compete.

The top 10 will then be contacted and will need to submit their recipe in full and upload an image of their proposed dish.
