A Grade 9 learner at a Cape Town high school is reportedly fearing for his life following an incident where he was allegedly threatened with a knife over a joke made in class.

Zulfah, a concerned grandmother from Salt River, stated on Tuesday that her grandson made a joke in class, which offended one of his classmates.

She says that the classmate then contacted his friends at Harold Cressy High School to stab the 14-year-old after school.

The grandmother explains: “Apparently last year this same classmate threatened my grandson with a knife at in school, but my grandson did not tell me this until things spiraled out of control on Tuesday.

“When school was dismissed these boys from Harold Cressy approached my grandson and took out a knife but he ran back to class and hid. He only came home after 6pm.

"The joke was about a girl in their class who likes this [bully], the [bully] asked my grandson what he and this girl spoke about, to which my grandson replied ‘It’s for me to know and for you to find out’, and the [bully] got upset."

“I informed the school and the principal said he would investigate. I cannot sit back and wait until something happens."

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond

Western Cape Education Department spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, confirmed that the incident has been reported. "The school was informed by the mother of the learner of the alleged incident."

“The school had various activities on until around 7pm last night and there was no indication of anything untoward happening outside the school, nor were they aware of any learner ‘hiding’ in the school premises.

“The school is making further enquiries into the allegations.”
