Against the background of reports of babies being dumped with the most recent headline, “Don’t judge me, mother who ‘dumped’ baby says in note”.
Such cruel acts must be condemned in the strongest terms. Dumping a baby for whatever reason is an inhuman action, illegal and a criminal offence.
I am conscious of the fact that often the causes that lead mothers to dump their babies can be complicated, but abandoning a child without any affection or respect for its physical well-being and safety is against the law and cold-hearted.
Mothers, parents or even families experiencing difficulties such as financial or personal issues and are unable to take care of their babies or their personal well-being should seek guidance from their nearest clinic, hospital or contact the Department of Social Development (DSD).
These structures assist expectant moms, single parents and other individuals facing challenges. These institutions have trained personnel who can assist with counselling, guidance and information on alternative options, to legally give up their babies for adoption without harm to the mom or child.
Unsafe child abandonment and the harms of teenage pregnancies must be addressed through education to safeguard the child’s right to life and the protection of the family unit.
