Cape Town ranked as the second most beautiful running city in Africa, according to Instagram.

Sports retailer SportsShoes.com analysed running-related Instagram hashtags for more than 600 cities worldwide to reveal the most stunning backdrops for a run.

Lagos placed first on the continent, and 19th globally, with 15 005 hashtags, followed by Cape Town and Cairo.

Durban followed in fourth place in Africa, followed by Pretoria in fifth position.

Globally, London placed first, with Chicago and Boston following in third and fourth positions respectively.

“Taking running selfies or uploading shots of jogging in a group can be an incredibly motivational tool, both for the runner themselves and their friends and family on social media,” said Dan Cartner, senior marketing and e-commerce manager at SportsShoes.com.

“With a staggering 56 million posts under the hashtag #run alone, we were curious to find out which cities were posting the most running photos on Instagram, as a method of inspiration to encourage people to hit the streets and find their own urban stride!

“London ranks as the most picturesque running destination in the entire world, but our research showcases that people across the globe are lacing up their running shoes and uploading shots of their cities following their endorphin-filled workouts.

“From the romantic streets of Paris and Berlin to densely packed skyscraper cities such as Chicago and Melbourne, clearly running is something we all have in common, and enjoy sharing on social media.”

More than 7 300 mentions for #RunCapeTown were recorded.

Many of the posts under #RunCapeTown showed off the city’s famous landmarks and beautiful scenery, with various routes affording lush views of Table Mountain.

Cairo received more than 2 000 mentions for #RunCairo.

Cairo boasts a growing running culture, with its rich history providing the ideal backdrop to any running route.
