Cape Town: City of Cape Town electricity users will not have load shedding on Wednesday, while Eskom announced that Stage 2 would be implemented from 4pm.
Eskom announced on Wednesday morning that due to a shortage of generation capacity, Stage 2 load shedding would be implemented during the evening peak period on Wednesday and at the same time on Thursday.
“The delay in returning a generation unit to service each at Arnot, Koeberg and the Kusile power stations, as well as the unplanned outage of a generation unit each at Camden, Medupi and two units each at Grootvlei, Hendrina and Majuba power stations, have exacerbated the capacity constraints. Some generation units are anticipated to return to service over the next few days,” Eskom said.
The City of Cape Town said it would implement load shedding between 5pm and 7pm only on Thursday.
“The City will protect its customers tonight and will only shed between 17:00 and 19:00. No load shedding is expected for City customers for the rest of the evening (Wednesday),” the City said.
Energy Mayco member Beverley van Reenen said geysers used the bulk of household energy, and reducing the temperature of the geyser to 60º Celsius or making sure the geyser is on a timer or only active for an hour or two per day was a crucial step to reducing energy usage.
“We thank residential and commercial customers who worked with us over the recent phase of load shedding by curtailing load (shedding) and also flattening the evening peak usage.”
