Cyclists should also need to get a licence

With reference to the recent series of letters about cyclists.

I agree that the real problem lies with a few; and probably those who are not members of a cycling group, club or organisation. But there is a problem and it needs addressing.

To me the main problem lies in that the transgressors cannot be held responsible for their actions, there is no way of identifying them.

Stopping and speaking to them is pointless as it rapidly leads to road rage incidents, or you simply get one or two fingers.

I used to cycle to school and in those days I needed to have a licence for my bike.

I suggest that as every other road user needs to licence their vehicle, cyclists should also need to get a licence, and along with that a lightweight vest carrying a unique number on the back, so that a transgressor can be identified and held accountable.

These vests (and licence) could be sponsored and any transgressor could lose that sponsorship; a simple method of enforcement.

I know there will be opposition to this from the cycling community, but they got used to wearing helmets when they realised the benefits.

Maybe the majority of law-abiding cyclists can appreciate the benefits of not always being collectively blamed.
