Cape Town – The Public Transport Voice welcomes the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the ongoing vandalism of the rail infrastructure on the Central line.

As an organisation, we applaud the good work done by the responsible officials.

We call for harsher sentences to these suspects, as they are not only vandalising the rail infrastructure, but they also sabotaging the economy of the country, and many people have also lost their jobs due these acts of vandalism.

We also call on Prasa to strengthen their security in order to prevent more vandalism, and Prasa should also prioritise the safety of commuters.

We have seen incidents of commuters being robbed in daylight inside the station premises, especially in Nolungile and Nonkqubela stations.

We have taken Prasa regional manager Richard Walker to those problematic stations and he listened to commuters who were complaining about the safety inside the station premises.

We question the deployment of the rail enforcement unit because we haven't seen yet them in Khayelitsha.

We also call for the establishment of a commission of inquiry, to unearth the modus operandi of these acts of vandalism.
