Home Affairs hasn’t processed marital status

I am desperate to find just one person who works for Home Affairs who can help me.

This is my predicament: I have recently got married to a man who was divorced about two years ago. He had been married for 10 years when his wife chose to ask for a divorce. After parting and going their separate ways, he and I met and got married.

He submitted all the necessary information to Home Affairs, as my surname has now changed and I need to get a new ID book and passport, not to mention all other aspects of life like changing the name on all my accounts.

My husband had advised Home Affairs of his change in marital status, but after two years he was still “married” to his previous wife, according to Home Affairs, as they had not got around to processing the information.

That leaves me in a very awkward position. I am now married to and living with a man who is still “married” to his previous wife, because Home Affairs has not got around to changing their records.

If only someone could advise me who we can talk to at the Home Affairs Office in Tongaat, Durban, we may be able to clear this up and get on with our lives.
