Some people earn obscene salaries. When is enough enough? John Wesley urged his followers to “gain all you can, save all you can and give all you can”.

Give all you can? Somehow, observance of the third rule has changed direction in a capitalist society.

Instead of giving to others, we prefer to splurge on ourselves.

The luxuries of the rich, unnecessary expenditure, extravagant divisions not only rob the poor but also generate envy, jealousy and anger.

Poverty is a world problem.

Before long, the gap widens. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Protest brings us into conflict with those responsible for developing policies that can help.

Martin Luther King demonstrated the dimensions of living in conflict.

Here in South Africa, the Gift of the Givers Foundation is showing what it means to “give all you can”.

They are leading the way in disaster relief and humanitarian response, selflessly ensuring that the spirit of hope is nurtured.

Our task to give all we can, but also to raise questions about why recipients are poor.
