As others have pointed out, the preparations for Day Zero are woefully inadequate.

The logistical issues involved in manually distributing water to the four million or so citizens of Cape Town are so great that the chances of it working are zero. That is the zero in Day Zero.

Fortunately we already have an excellent distribution system in place, many people have taps inside their homes where they can get water.

Of course the problem is that they are all too handy and people are using too much water.

So simply cut off the water for the 10, 15, 20 or 23 hours a day that is required to bring consumption down to a level that means it won’t run out.

It will not be easy to adapt to, but it means everyone will get some water and we won’t run out.

Just carrying on roughly as we are until the water runs out on Day Zero is so stupid, and so easily avoidable.

I feel like I am living in a parallel universe that those in charge even propose it.
