DURBAN - THE eThekwini metro police unit has commended the officers who responded to help businessman and owner of Max’s Lifestyle, Max Mqadi, when he was shot by two unknown men outside his business two weeks ago in uMlazi.

Details were sketchy following Mqadi’s shooting on the night of October 14 but metro police have told the Daily News the version of events through the eyes of the officers that Mqadi approached after he was shot.

Following the shooting, it was alleged that Mqadi, who was shot multiple times, drove himself to Florida Road where he was then taken to a hospital in uMhlanga.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said Mqadi saw metro police officers at the corner of Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme and Shepstone roads and stopped.

“There were still spent cartridges, bullets and blood in his car, so he didn’t want them to come into his car or drive his car because it’s all evidence,” Sewpersad said.

“He told them he needs help and they offered to help and escorted him to uMhlanga Hospital.”

Sewpersad said that was what their officers told them and had reported it to their control room.

The officers were Captain Andile Mseleku, Constable Sihle Maphumulo, Constable Zama Mdlalose, Constable Ayanda Majola, Constable Zamo Mthimkhulu and Constable Nomfundo Ngcobo.

“I want to commend these members that acted without fear or favour and took this man (Mqadi) to save his life otherwise he would have ultimately bled to his demise,” Sewpersad said.

“I must commend those two police officers who assisted him at that time when he really required help.”

He said this was one of many good deeds metro police officers had done when they were on the road and approached by the public.

He noted Mqadi’s local and international status. He said Mqadi was close to the eThekwini council and metro police. As someone who attended many events, visitors would ask him how they could get to Max’s Lifestyle.

“They would also want to take a tour bus to uMlazi.

“He has always been very humble and very giving to the metro police. He is a world-prominent businessman and everybody who comes from other parts of the world to the ICC is looking for Max,” Sewpersad said.

Max’s Lifestyle Village has issued a statement expressing their gratitude to the management of the metro police after they played a role in saving his life.

Mqadi has since been discharged from hospital.
