DURBAN - An estimated R15.5 million worth of relief packages have been allocated for the victims of disaster in uMgungundlovu District Municipality.

The KZN MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Jomo Sibiya, was in the uMgungundlovu District Municipality for an official handover of relief packages on Thursday.

On Wednesday he was in iLembe District Municipality to assess damages.

The uMgungundlovu District is made up of the uMshwathi; uMngeni; Mpofana; Impendle; Msunduzi; Mkhambathini and Richmond municipalities.

Sibiya said the recent floods bring home the fact that extreme weather patterns will continue to have devastating effects on the rollout of human settlements.

The relief packages will be handed to the profiled families in wards 21, 22 and 29 under Msunduzi Local Municipality.

Sibiya said there are 112 families that will have Temporary Residential Units (TRUs) constructed and 485 families will now be in a position to buy building materials of their choice.

Sibiya on Thursday planned to introduce a contractor to build the TRUs, a service provider for building material and the contractor for roof tile replacement and the presentation of R8 000 vouchers to families to buy building materials of their choice.

Sibiya said the department is concerned about upholding human rights and dignity and having a decent shelter is part of the restoration of the dignity of indigenous people.

Sibiya said that in Copesville land has been set aside to build houses for the local community.

“Currently, there is a project that is undertaking engineering services. This will soon move into the construction phase of much-needed houses. Almost 800 infrastructure services have been constructed. These include roads, water, sanitation and stormwater.”

Sibiya is expected to visit uMngeni Local Municipality for the official handover of relief packages to the affected communities.
