Durban — Chatsworth police are investigating a case of carjacking after a motorist was hijacked by three gun wielding suspects.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that the complainant alleged that on Wednesday at 6.30pm, he was waiting for his residential gate to open when he was accosted by three suspects.

“At gunpoint the suspects robbed him of his vehicle and sped off,” Gwala said.

“A case of carjacking was opened at Chatsworth police station for investigation.”

In a 2:06 minute video, a vehicle is seen with its hazard lights flashing on the road for over a minute before the hijacking. During that minute, the driver’s door briefly opens and closes and other vehicles drive up and down the road.

Then another vehicle pulls up next to it and what appears to be two suspects pull the motorist out of the vehicle and drive off.

The motorist can be heard calling out for help.

Commenting on social media on the video, Shivg Trading said the motorist was followed.

"An Etios hatch passes the motorist and continues down the road to make a u-turn only to perform the criminal act. Always be vigilant, gotta watch out if someone is following you,” Trading said.

Jaykimphotography Videography said: “If your (sic) chilling in your car with your hazards on, at least lock your doors and pay attention to your surroundings.”

Jüstin Kleynhans said: “That car was parked there waaaaaay too long. Anyone could see that coming a mile away. It's unfortunate and sad, but we all know what we (are) living in. Be sharp.”

According to a report on the Chatsworth Crime Watch Facebook page, the vehicle was a silver BMW 320D and it was later recovered in Umlazi.
