Durban — The South African music scene is filled with many diverse individuals/groups that are unknown to the public. Masters of their craft, these artists continually use their gift to provide a source of inspiration to those that have none. One such artist is Ashleigh Lafoy.
Ashleigh Lafoy (aka Lex Lafoy) is a rapper, writer, creative project manager, and community development specialist. She has a cultural producers programme graduate from BASA (Business and Art South Africa) and is also a radio podcast producer and presenter who uses her craft and talent to try to provide inspiration for others.
“I started my career as a rapper back in 2004, during my matric.
“Along my career path as a rapper, it helped me discover my strengths and where my strengths are needed. This is how I attained these other titles.”
In her 18-year-rap career, she has managed to release six bodies of work (mixtapes, albums and extended plays) and has featured with numerous local artists such as Ifani, Lord Script, Fiesta Black, Rubygold and Sketchy Bongo.
Lafoy emphasises that sales do not drive her. “As an independent, female artist in South Africa, it isn’t easy, but having the creative freedom for my own work exceeds that of sales.”
Lafoy was recently involved in the Peace 4 Sydenham concert that was held on October 29. She was the project manager, visionary as well as a performer at the event.
“I realised it was a success the moment I saw people of all ages dancing. My measure of success is not only the execution, but also the measure of positive social impact.”
Over 150 people including crew, artists and speakers were involved in this concert and around 15 artists were involved in performing.
“I created the event to try to create awareness for peace, unity, social cohesion and hope. The primary reason for BASA is because I want to help in discussions of how metropolitans can support greater developments of creatives in the country. Through earning an income through other creative business means, it improved my relationship with my music.”
For the rest of 2022, Lafoy plans to release a single and music video for a song called “Pretty Boys”.
