South African B-girl Courtnaé Paul is set to represent her country at the Red Bull BC One world finals in Rio on December 7.
For many, the prospect of showcasing their nation on a global stage can be overwhelming. However, for Paul, one of Africa’s leading B-girls, it brings a blend of gratitude, excitement, and nerves.
She admits to feeling “butterflies, gratitude, and nerves” every time she represents South Africa. “When that excitement fades, I’ll know it’s time for a new chapter,” she says.
The year 2024 has been a whirlwind for this breakdancing powerhouse, filled with remarkable milestones and achievements that highlight her dedication and passion.
One of the standout moments for her was winning her second Red Bull BC One South Africa title.
Paul ranked as the highest African in the inaugural Olympic Qualifier Series, spoke at the Forbes Africa Women’s Conference, opened and hosted the red carpet at the GSport Awards, appeared on the cover of Hype Magazine, and won the title of AfroBreak International Champion in Ghana. Additionally, she has signed on as a Red Bull BC One Ambassador.
Despite the glamour, her journey hasn’t been without challenges. “This year’s been a real rollercoaster – a mix of amazing moments and tough times,” she reflects. Her approach to managing it all includes being kinder to herself, asking for help when needed, and taking things one step at a time.
Currently, she is in Brazil for the first time, fully immersing herself in the culture by meeting locals, trying new foods, and absorbing the vibrant atmosphere. However, this isn’t just a vacation; she’s returning to the Red Bull BC One Last Chance Cypher after a three-year hiatus. “I’m excited to show my growth and put all my efforts and training to the test,” she shares.
Winning the AfroBreak International Championship in Accra was another significant milestone for her. “Competing in Ghana was wild! The heat and humidity were relentless, but the excitement kept us going,” she recalls.
Witnessing the growth of breakdancing across Africa has been particularly inspiring for Paul. “It gives me so much hope, and I can’t wait to explore more of our continent through dance,” she says. This year’s Red Bull BC One South Africa competition also imparted valuable lessons.
Hosted in Johannesburg for the first time in years, the atmosphere was electric. Yet, what resonated with her most was not about winning or losing. “All I wanted to do was enjoy the moment and represent myself well,” she explains. Her evolving perspective highlights her growth as both an artist and a person.
“Being part of such a prestigious competition will always be a highlight for me,” she remarks, demonstrating that despite the accolades, her joy remains rooted in the journey. As 2024 comes to a close, it’s clear that Paul is just getting started.
Whether she’s breaking it down on a dance floor in Ghana, enjoying the sun in Rio, or inspiring young dancers worldwide, one thing is certain: she’s breaking boundaries in every sense of the word.
