Couple launches online video game store

Tired of dealing with sales staff who cannot tell the difference between a game and a DVD movie? Bored with the same old game bundles that no one wants?

This is the welcoming message on the home page of Lancoza - an online video gaming store launched in March by Cape Town couple Ebrahim and Shaheeda Sadien.

There are no ready statistics on South Africans' gaming habits, but Ebrahim reckons gaming is taken up mostly by those aged between 16 and 35.

Ebrahim just makes it into the demographic cut-off and he is not about to end his habit.

He received his first game - a gift from his father - when he was 10. It was a hand-held Nintendo with Donkey Kong.

"I played it to death," says Ebrahim, now 34.

These days his game of choice is more likely to be a multiplayer one, such as Gears Of War 2. With this type of game, you play with other gamers, rather than against them.

Ebrahim loves the co-operative aspect, which allows for social interaction. He and his gaming buddy have managed to clock the game on four occasions.

It is also possible for two people to play online. By sitting at your own console, linked through your modem and router, you can play against your buddy, who is sitting at his or her console. Separate but together.

To play online in real time both players need to be subscribers to XBox Live (about R400 a year). This service is not available in South Africa, which means that one has to set it up in the United Kingdom or US. It's a complicated business, but you can get into the loop and play Gears of War online through Lancoza. Give Lancoza a call on 021 409 7079.

Ebrahim founded Lancoza to fill a much-needed niche and to help the tech-savvy to get maximum enjoyment out of gameplay.

It is more effective to have a console, rather than a PC, to play games, explains Ebrahim.

Why? It is a bit like kitchen appliances.

You can toast a piece of bread in your oven and do without a toaster. True, but it is not convenient, uses up more electricity, and your toast may burn. Also, one can boil water on a stove and do without a kettle, but this will take longer and use more power.

Similarly, while it is possible to play some games on PCs, there are a heap of good reasons to buy a device that is designed for gaming and equipped to handle the intricacies of the games.

PCs are vulnerable to viruses, and games eat up space and clog up your hard drive.

Since trading began, Lancoza's website has had 105 000 hits.

"Our website is more than an online retailer. We have a blog that is regularly updated with gaming and technology news."

The name "Lancoza" combines LAN - as in Local Area Network, a computer network covering a small geographic area - and co.za, which is the local Internet domain.

Although the business is web-based, the Sadiens are happy to field telephone calls and talk people through the selection of games, hardware, and accessories.

Customers have the option of collecting their purchases rather than receiving them by courier. If they collect them from Lancoza's offices in Cape Town, they do not pay the courier charge.

Ebrahim says his upcoming plans include running promotional events, with merchandising and promotional toys and outreach programmes.

"We are working with local game distributors to host launch events in Cape Town for major game releases.

"Most launch events occur only overseas and those that happen locally are hosted in Gauteng".

The couple also want to make gaming affordable and accessible.

The Lancoza Gamers Club, scheduled to be launched at the end of this month, will offer customers the opportunity to rent a game for five days from Monday to Friday. Customers will to pay R100 for the rental, but receive a R50 refund once the game is returned.

The customer may, however, decide to pay the balance and buy the game.

Ebrahim says he is also working on a project to help schoolchildren develop an interest in IT.

"The idea is to use gaming as a gateway for learning.

"We will implement an inter-school gaming competition on local and regional levels."
