Renowned South African rapper and songwriter Big Zulu has once again demonstrated his extraordinary resilience and creativity by unveiling his new album, “Icala Lempumelelo”, shortly after enduring a significant car crash.
The musical idol, acclaimed for his powerful lyrics and commanding stage presence, has crafted a project reflecting not only his artistic journey but also his unwavering strength amidst personal adversity.
Earlier this year, Zulu, hailing from Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal, was involved in a near-fatal car accident that left his BMW 325 extensively damaged, highlighting the severity of this life-altering experience.
Following this ordeal, he celebrated his 39th birthday on April 7 and expressed immense gratitude to the divine for his protection during the harrowing time.
Released on April 11, “Icala Lempumelelo” is a vibrant homage to Zulu's musical versatility and deep-rooted cultural identity.
This star-studded project, featuring a myriad of both legends and rising talents, skillfully weaves together the genres of hip hop and Afro-pop.
Notable collaborations include industry icons such as uBab’ Shwi, Sjava, and Emtee, as well as promising newcomers like Ma7.
The album consists of 12 compelling tracks with standout moments, including the anthemic lead single “Abazazi Bafunani”, featuring Emtee.
The genre-fluid track “Mbali Yam” showcases Aymos, while the soul-stirring “Interlude” includes contributions from Sjava and Ma7, illustrating the rich tapestry of South African music heritage embedded in the album.
In an impassioned message to his fans, Zulu remarked, “I would like to thank my team for the hard work they put in, including everyone that has shown me love in Durban and Johannesburg.
In this album, I highlighted the love I have for different genres. Everyone will get a treat featuring legends and upcoming talents, all adding a touch to the culture.”
In light of Zulu's remarkable return, the music scene continues to buzz with excitement, as fans have other must-listen albums on the horizon.
Among these is “Boss Zonke Forever” by Riky Rick, which revisits his journey through a celebratory lens ten years after his debut.
Another notable release is “Rough Dance” by DJ Maphorisa and Xduppy, a high-energy project that captures the pulse of SA’s vibrant nightlife through infectious grooves and hard-hitting beats.
