Netflix has reaffirmed its commitment to providing advanced features and content tailored to families, emphasising a delightful and secure viewing experience.
This initiative was highlighted during the 'Netflix for Families' event, which was attended by local child experts, policymakers, parenting bloggers, NGOs, government stakeholders, and representatives of civil society.
Understanding that every family is unique, Netflix remains dedicated to offering a diverse array of content alongside user-friendly tools to help parents customise their children’s experience.
Ensuring that children consume age-appropriate, safe, and non-harmful content is a top concern for parents, particularly in an age where screen time is prevalent.
“We want parents to have the information and tools they need to make the right decisions for their families,” said Shola Sanni, Netflix’s Director of Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa.
“That's why we offer a range of tools that can help parents tailor their kids’ profile experience to fit their preferences.”
As online platforms become increasingly accessible, Netflix hosted a panel discussion focusing on the importance of safe entertainment viewing for families.
The panel included notable figures such as Educational Psychologist Dr. Tshepiso Matentjie, cyber safety and digital expert Rianette Leibowitz, Professor of Criminology Julia Davidson, Andrew Sebapu from the Film and Publication Board, and Ziyanda Buthelezi-Ngcobo, Netflix’s SA Public Policy Senior Manager.
Professor Davidson highlighted the evolving nature of cyber issues and the necessity for a collaborative approach to tackling these challenges. “The online risks we face in society are a global, multi-stakeholder issue that needs to be addressed collectively, not in isolation. Effective education and awareness are also crucial.”
Dr Matentjie emphasised the importance of parental involvement in discussions about cyber risks with their children. “Many parents feel intimidated by technology. It’s crucial for them to let go of the need to be experts and instead be open to learning. This approach allows them to effectively guide and advise their children.”
The event also delved into the latest trends and best practices for protecting children in the digital age, offering parents and caregivers strategies to help children thrive while staying protected from online risks.
In partnership with South Africa’s Film and Publication Board (FPB), Netflix has aligned its maturity ratings with local regulations, ensuring that parents can effectively manage and supervise their children's viewing experiences.
Buthelezi-Ngcobo stated, “Netflix is committed to safeguarding children’s rights. We continue to collaborate with the government, NGOs, policymakers, and others to deliver content that enhances learning and entertainment for kids.
“Our 24-hour help center and trained agents are available to assist parents and guardians with any concerns regarding Netflix titles.”
This event cemented Netflix’s dedication to creating a safe and enriching environment for children, providing parents with the necessary tools and information to navigate the digital landscape confidently.
