In an era where the origins of our food are becoming increasing important, a new documentary series, “Lamb Champs: The Heart and Soul of Sheep Farming”, takes viewers on an enlightening journey through the world of sheep farming in South Africa.

The six-episode series delves into the lives of six farmers whose dedication to their craft elevates mutton from mere meat to a symbol of tradition and family gatherings.

South African model and TV presenter, Minki van der Westhuizen, travels across the country, following these farmers as they prepare for the esteemed 2024 Lamb Champs competition held in Pretoria, where the top sheep farmer will get the chance to win R160,000 in prizes.

This initiative, championed by Saai (Southern Africa Agri Initiative), aims to elevate the visibility of family farmers and their lamb products, creating a narrative that connects consumers with the rich tapestry of local agriculture.

Francois Rossouw, CEO of Saai, emphasises the importance of lamb in South African culture: “We braai lamb when we have special people around us. It’s a meal that means more. It’s the scent of memories, of togetherness, of family.

“It’s that moment when a family gathers around the fire, when friends laugh together while the coals glow. Lamb is not just meat, it’s a beacon of tradition.”

This sentiment reflects the emotional depth of the doccie, inviting viewers to see beyond the supermarket shelves and engage with the stories of the farmers who pour their hearts into their work.

The featured farmers represent a diverse array of backgrounds. Some are part of multi-generational family farms, while others are pioneering the sheep farming journey as first-generation renters.

According to a statement, Saai said: “This is not just an agricultural series, it's a story of family, tradition and heritage. It's an invitation to consumers to see where their meat really comes from, to reconnect with food and to understand the true value of family farming.”

∎ “Lamb Champs: The Heart and Soul of Sheep Farming” will premiere on March 16 on kykNET (DStv channel 144) at 8pm. It will be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
