In an extraordinary collaboration with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, Reddam House Umhlanga is set to enchant audiences with its upcoming production of "Anastasia the Musical", which will run from Sunday, March 16, to Wednesday, March 19.
The show, drawn from the beloved animated film and the Broadway musical, chronicles the journey of a brave young woman named Anya, aka Anastasia, as she seeks to discover her true identity amid the chaos following the fall of the Russian Empire.
Anya’s journey intertwines with the colourful characters of a charming con man and a kind-hearted ex-aristocrat, all while evading a ruthless Soviet officer determined to eradicate her past.
Director Helet Postma expressed the timeless relevance of the play's themes in today's world.
"In a world experiencing constant political and social shifts, the central theme of identity, wanting to belong and understanding who you truly are feels more relevant than ever. This production offers a powerful, universal message that will resonate with audiences of all ages."
The exciting collaboration with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra sets this staging apart, promising an auditory delight that enhances the emotional journey of the musical.
With choreographer Lynn Totham-Crommie at the helm and musical direction from Russell Scott, the production melds a rich tapestry of musical styles, evoking both the romance of Paris in the 1920s and the opulence of the Royal Romanov Palace.
This production marks the full Broadway version of "Anastasia" being staged in South Africa, an achievement that adds to the excitement.
Postma assures audiences that the adaptation remains true to the vibrant characters and captivating music of the original show.
"Given the script’s vibrant characters, captivating music and strong ensemble-driven approach, we have stayed as true to the original as possible. That said, I do feel for our actors performing in full Russian attire under the heat of the Durban stage lights," said Postma.
She said, "Few schools have the privilege of staging a production of this calibre, especially alongside the renowned KZN Philharmonic Orchestra."
Reddam House Umhlanga is renowned for its high-calibre musical theatre, and this latest offering continues that tradition by aiming to inspire awe and admiration within its spectators.
With the seating styled in a Barnyard-Supper Theatre format, guests will have the added pleasure of enjoying dinner and refreshments while fully immersing themselves in the performance.
As the final touches are being put to the show, Postma echoes a familiar sentiment within the theatrical community: "Theatre is a 'team sport' and you are only as strong as your weakest actor, so ensemble work is a major focus.
"Between vocal and choreography rehearsals, we block the scenes and the final stages in all departments are dedicated to refining the performance. We are incredibly fortunate to have a production team of industry professionals bringing this show to life," she shared.
Before joining Reddam House Umhlanga, Postma worked under the expert guidance of director, writer and creative entrepreneur, Hennie Van Greunen.
She said that she has always loved directing musicals, despite her passion for Postmodern South African theatre.
Before putting this production together, Postma said that it was important to solidify vocals and choreography to strengthen the show’s ensemble.
"We have a brilliant cast. Thomas Veale takes on the role as Vlad, Rebecca Major plays the lead, Anastasia, and Justin Perniguey plays Dmitry ... High-quality theatre is a rare treat in Durban, making this an unmissable opportunity for audiences young and old to experience the magic of live performance," said Postma.
