Durban - Up-and-coming local musician Winnow Myeki's single Killing Me focuses on the deep hurt which can happen in a relationship, with the singer saying it also applies to the lockdown year and Covid-19.

Myeki, 22, said the song, which was released in mid-December, was distributed by United Masters and is being shared on different social media platforms.

"I had gone through a very rough time in a relationship, which is why I wrote the song. It is personal and I sing part of it in Zulu," he said, adding that he hoped listeners also going through a difficult time would feel empathy with the song and not feel quite so alone.

Having grown up in uMlazi, after leaving school, Myeki went on to study civil engineering but realised he had to follow his true calling.

"From when I was very young, I enjoyed singing, and family and friends will tell you that all I did was shout and sing.

"I love performing live, from music through to acting and dance. At first my mom did not like it, but now she understands that this is my path and supports me in everything I do," said Myeki, who grew up with his mother and four siblings.

Having just started the year attending KCap (KwaMashu Community Advancement Projects), Myeki said he could now focus on his passion for the arts.

"By the end of this year, I will be a professional actor, singer and dancer. I'm also very much an ’ideas’ guy," he said, highlighting that he has performed at events such as Poetry Africa, as well as other local events.

"Looking ahead, music comes first for me, followed by acting and then dance," he said.

Owner of The Gallery, at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito, Jane Digby said that Myeki works as a part-time gallery assistant and is a “very creative” person.

"Winnow has got the most lovely spirit. He comes up with great ideas, he has great energy and he knows how to connect with people," she said.
