After the rise in popularity of ghee coffee for weight loss, ghee tea is trending online. Many social media users have suggested adding a dollop of ghee to your cup of tea for better health. It’s being praised as a superfood for gut health, period relief and constipation.

Ghee, known as clarified butter, has a rich, nutty flavour. It has been a staple in Indian and Middle East cuisine for centuries. It is known not only for its delectable taste but also for its health benefits.

Ghee is also a staple in Ayurvedic traditions and is rich in healthy fats, vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Traditionally known for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties, it is being added to tea, creating a soothing and creamy beverage.

While ghee coffee was embraced for its weight loss benefits, ghee tea (which is a combination of ghee and traditional tea, such as black or herbal) is being promoted as a superfood for digestive health and overall well-being.

How do you make it? There are several ways to prepare ghee tea. As mentioned, you can brew black or herbal tea and add a teaspoon of ghee. Other versions suggest adding carom seeds and sugar to enhance flavour.

But what’s the point of switching to ghee tea, especially when that morning cup of chai feels too precious to alter? According to health experts, the benefits might be worth it.

Experts reveal that ghee is a good source of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D and E, along with being a great source of Omega 3 fatty acids, and having ghee in tea will, over time, help enhance metabolism as well as our skin’s radiance.

They say it acts as a lubricant and can work wonders for our joints. They also say ghee tea has the potential to improve the body’s absorption process and serve as an immunity booster.

While ghee tea might offer possible advantages, there are a few things to consider:

Ghee is calorie-dense and high in fats, so it should be consumed in moderation. Health experts note that overconsumption could lead to excessive calorie intake.
