As time marches on, our teeth may lose the brightness they once had. Everyday habits like indulging in coffee, tea, or red wine, coupled with lifestyle factors such as smoking, contribute to the gradual dulling of those once-sparkling smiles.

Ageing aggravates this process, as the enamel wears down, exposing the yellowish dentin beneath.

However, gone are the days when teeth whitening was deemed a luxury, reserved solely for celebrities and the affluent.

Today, an array of whitening solutions is readily available to a wider audience, allowing almost anyone to pursue that coveted bright smile.

Dr Cathrine Malau, a dentist at the School of Oral Health Sciences at the Wits Oral Health Centre, attests to this remarkable shift.

"Teeth whitening has transitioned from being a luxury for the few to an option accessible to a wider audience," she explains.

This transformation has been driven by demographic changes and the increasing availability of whitening products - making the quest for a radiant smile more commonplace than ever.

Nonetheless, for many, the struggle to maintain those pearly whites becomes more daunting with age. Not only does natural discolouration happen, but bad habits can exacerbate the issue.

Fortunately, Malau notes that today’s market offers numerous at-home solutions, professional treatments, and products designed specifically to keep smiles shining bright.

To support individuals on this journey to whiter teeth, Malau shares several practical tips:

Daily oral care is key

Regular brushing and flossing are essential for good oral hygiene. Malau says while whitening products can help brighten smiles, a consistent oral care routine is vital.

Brushing twice a day with a quality toothpaste protects against cavities and gum disease while reducing surface stains.

She recommends Aquafresh Complete Care Whitening toothpaste, which is designed to tackle plaque and strengthen enamel.

Limit staining beverages

Some everyday drinks can dull our teeth. According to Malau, coffee, tea, red wine, and cola are significant offenders.

“These beverages can stain your enamel over time,” she advises. Using a straw can help limit contact between these liquids and your teeth, reducing staining.

Use whitening toothpaste

Malau points out that whitening toothpaste can effectively remove surface stains. These products typically contain mild abrasives and special agents to brighten smiles without needing more invasive treatments.

“A whitening formula not only protects against cavities but also freshens breath and strengthens enamel,” she notes.

Avoid tobacco

Tobacco use is detrimental not just to teeth but also to overall oral health. Malau states that quitting smoking is one of the best ways to maintain a bright smile and prevent serious health issues.

“It can make a significant difference to your smile and your overall wellbeing,” she says.

Consider professional treatments

For quicker results, professional whitening treatments are an option. These in-office procedures often involve applying a bleaching agent, sometimes using special lighting to enhance the effect.

However, she suggests consulting a dentist before starting any treatment to find the best option for individual dental health.

Preserve your results

Once a whiter smile is achieved, maintaining it is crucial. Regular use of whitening toothpaste and mindful consumption of staining foods and drinks can help keep teeth bright.

Malau reminds that “whitening is just the first step”. A good oral care routine is essential for lasting results.

"With the right tools and advice, you will always be a brush away from a more confident and whiter smile," she concludes.

By following these simple practices and utilising appropriate products, anyone can cultivate a healthy, luminous smile that lasts for years.
