Everybody loves a fabulous New Year’s Eve bash but waking up on New Year’s Day with a pounding headache and nausea is not the best way to start a new year.

With all the “New year. New me” resolutions, how can one possibly start anew when you’re nursing a hangover?

Fortunately, there are effective ways to prevent a hangover without missing out on all the festivities.

Follow these tips to greet the new year feeling your best.

Plan ahead

Before heading to the party, prepare your body.

Eat a hearty, balanced meal rich in carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

This will slow alcohol absorption, reducing its impact on your system.

Drinking plenty of water beforehand ensures you start the evening hydrated.

Choose your drinks wisely

Not all alcoholic beverages are created equal.

Drinks with higher levels of congeners, such as whiskey, red wine, and dark liquors, are more likely to cause hangovers.

Opt for lighter options like vodka or white wine, and steer clear of sugary cocktails, which can worsen dehydration.

Pace yourself

Sip your drinks slowly and savour the moment.

A good rule of thumb is to stick to one standard drink per hour.

Alternating alcoholic beverages with water or non-alcoholic options will help you stay hydrated and reduce overall alcohol intake.

Avoid mixing drinks

Stick to one type of alcohol throughout the night.

Mixing different drinks can increase the likelihood of overconsumption and intensify your hangover symptoms.

Hydrate throughout

Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it depletes your body of fluids and essential electrolytes.

Combat this by drinking water between each alcoholic drink and before going to bed.

Electrolyte-rich beverages like coconut water or sports drinks are even better for replenishing lost nutrients.

Know your limits

Listen to your body and avoid overindulging.

While it can be tempting to keep up with the party’s energy, knowing your limits is key to enjoying the night without paying for it the next day.

Don’t miss out on sleep

Alcohol disrupts your natural sleep cycle, so aim to get a full night’s rest.

If possible, allow extra time to recover before facing the day.

With some preparation, mindful choices, and self-care, you’ll wake up on New Year’s Day refreshed and ready to tackle your resolutions.
