Friendship is one of the most elite concepts. Meeting a stranger and forming a bond that turns into a sisterhood or brotherhood is amazing because these are the people who help you navigate life.
As an adult, I’ve learned that it’s better to be friends with someone who values friendship as much as you do.
My closest friend is in the UK and, despite the distance, we both put effort into our friendship. We’ve been friends since high school and when she moved last year, I was happy for her but sad for myself because we did all the fun things together.
As millennials, we have adopted the Gen Z style of friendships and it works wonders.
We call each other at least three times a week and we plan on hosting monthly virtual dates.
Gen Z is one of the best generations because they take friendship seriously. According to a study conducted by Cindy Lim of YUZU, Match Group’s newest app, it was revealed that 83% of Gen Z prioritise friendships over romance, redefining traditional notions of connections.
While the study also revealed that 85% of Gen Z believe online friendships can be meaningful, it is important to maintain physical friendships because you cannot always be on your phone.
You need to be outside and connect with people by having face-to-face interactions.
Below are tips on how to navigate friendships in this new digital age.
Embrace shared experiences
There is a reason why you and that person became friends, you have something in common. Shared activities like yoga, cooking, hiking or whichever activities you both like will help you reconnect and keep the fire burning.
Be intentional about your connections
As we grow, we understand the importance of meaningful connections. If you and your friend no longer have something in common, it’s time to revisit your relationship and find out about the changes in your lives and how you can rebuild your relationship.
Leverage technology to bridge gaps
It’s almost impossible to see your friends every week in the real adult world. However, with the help of technology, you can always do weekly check-ins by video calling or sending each other funny memes just to let them know that even with their busy schedules, you still care for them.
Cultivate vulnerability and authenticity
Friendships thrive when people are genuine. Share your passions, struggles, and aspirations to create a space where others feel comfortable doing the same.
Build diversity into your social circle
Step out of your comfort zone by connecting with people from different backgrounds. Diversity enriches your perspective and deepens your social experiences.
