The IFP has described the recent clamp down by police on illegal activity in the eThekwini Metro as a step toward restoring the city to its former glory.
“The IFP is proud to see the government delivering on its manifesto promise to restore eThekwini to its former glory by addressing the challenges posed by illegal immigrants and crime,” said the party in a statement.
Last week the police tackled criminality in the city, it was reported that a total of six hijacked buildings were raided and thousands of counterfeit Dollars, as well as ammunition, were seized.
Police were searching hijacked buildings for illegal firearms and undocumented foreign nationals, saying the raids were necessary to deal with the issue of buildings being illegally occupied.
It was reported that KZN Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi described Durban as a den for criminals.
The IFP said it commends the KZN Provincial Government, under the leadership of Premier Thami Ntuli, for its significant and long-overdue initiative to combat crime, drug trafficking, and the removal of illegal immigrants in eThekwini.
It said a collaborative effort between the Community Safety Department under the Premier’s Office, the SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, Health, and Social Development recently led to the arrest of over 120 illegal immigrants. The operation also resulted in the seizure of counterfeit Dollars worth over R4 million and the recovery of illegal substances and drugs.
“We urge the provincial government and its partners to make this crucial operation a regular initiative, rather than a one-time effort. We also call on additional stakeholders to support this vital mission,” said the party.
