The SA Post Office has advised beneficiaries of the R350 Social Relief of Distress grant not to consider paying bribes to get ahead in queues as it constitutes criminal activity.

“Anyone who is exposed to this practice should collect as much evidence as possible and report the incident to the police,” said Post Office spokesperson Johan Kruger.

People who would like to report this crime can also contact the Post Office’s toll-free crime hotline on 0800 020 070.

Kruger added that apart from collecting grants at Post Office branches, the grant application process now allows individuals to indicate when they apply that they would like to withdraw their grant from any Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, Shoprite or Usave supermarket.

He said grant recipients should include this option on their application to avoid long queues.

However, this option was available to those who used their phone to apply only for their own grant. Beneficiaries who share a cellphone to apply for the grant can only collect the grant from a Post Office branch.

Kruger added that recipients did not need to visit Post Office branches to check if the grants were available to be paid.

He said they can check the status of the grant by going to https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status
