The former National Freedom Party secretary-general Canaan Mdletshe has joined the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP).
This comes after he resigned as secretary-general of the NFP last month over the party’s coalition pact with the ANC and DA in KwaZulu-Natal.
Some suggested that Mdletshe resigned because he could not handle the pressure.
Mdletshe revealed to ‘The Mercury’ that his new political home is MKP. This was after he was spotted wearing MKP regalia at the Durban High Court, where the trademark matter between the ANC and MKP was heard on Thursday.
He said leaving the NFP was not an easy decision.
“Well the writing is on the wall, as you can see. MKP is now my new home and I am very happy to be here. My previous party did not stand for what I stand for anymore, so from now on I am an MKP member but I am yet to meet uBaba (Jacob Zuma) to discuss my role in the party,” Mdletshe said.
Mdletshe was one of the most senior members of the party, having been with the party since its formation in 2011 under the leadership of the late Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi.
The party has been rocked by a litany of internal power struggles since the death of KaMagwaza-Msibi, and losing its main power base in KZN with many of its supporters returning to the IFP.
