Durban - KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca yesterday paid a visit to the family of a traffic officer who was killed on duty this week.

Assistant Superintendent Colin Sibusiso Poh Zulu, 54, died after he was hit by a bakkie which had collided with another vehicle during an active roadblock operation along the R102 between Darnall and KwaDukuza CBD on Tuesday.

“KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca has expressed sadness over the tragic loss of another high-ranking traffic officer, and she will be visiting the family (yesterday) afternoon, 07 December 2022, in Maphumulo,” said a municipal statement.

The municipality said Zulu joined the municipality in 1994 as a Protection Officer under the Traffic Department and in 2011 he assumed the rank of Superintendent: Traffic.

“We are deeply disturbed by the untimely passing on of Supt Zulu. Death has robbed us of another dedicated and well experienced servant of the people,” said the mayor.

Nhaca said Zulu’s death was a huge blow to the Zulu family, the institution of local government, the law enforcement fraternity, and the entire community of KwaDukuza.

“The untimely passing of Supt Zulu comes at a time while are still trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of his counterpart (Boaventura) who worked with him for the best part of his career after joining the institution at the dawn of democracy,” she said.

Nhaca said she would be leading a delegation to the Zulu family, ”to share with them our sorrows; to offer our words of strength and comfort as we mourn the one who had dedicated his life to afford the people of KwaDukuza the service of high standard.”

Last month, senior traffic law enforcement official Superintendent Eddie Boaventura was shot several times and succumbed to multiple injuries while in hospital.

The mayor said Boaventura spent the best part of his life serving the people of KwaDukuza for at least 30 years.

“We have lost a veteran of note who was well known for his commitment to duty,” said Nhaca.
