Durban - The driver of a bakkie that crashed on the R612 between iXopo and Highflats on Sunday resulting in the death of seven passengers has been arrested and will soon be appearing in the iXopo Magistrate’s Court.
A joint statement by the KZN Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison and the KZN Department of Social Development on Thursday said the driver would be facing charges of culpable homicide and negligent driving.
The announcement of the arrest was made by MEC Sipho Hlomuka and MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza during a visit to the accident scene.
The statement said it was alleged that the vehicle was speeding at the time of the crash.
“The vehicle was speeding excessively and hit the guard rail on the opposite bound (lane) before losing control. The section of the road where the accident happened has just been rehabilitated and is in a good condition,” said the statement.
A memorial arranged for the deceased at the local Soweto Hall in iXopo was attended by both MECs following the visit to the accident scene.
Hlomuka welcomed the arrest of the bakkie driver.
He said the arrest would go a long way in ensuring that the rule of law is respected and adhered to.
“Such arrests will ensure that people respect the rule of law,” said Hlomuka.
Hlomuka added that road accidents were a menace to society and everyone needed to play an active role.
“We are here to comfort the families and to send condolences on behalf of the provincial government,” said the MEC.
Khoza told the families that the government would assist them with a social relief programme.
“This is tragic and as a (caring) government we must work with you families during this difficult time. As a department we will work with the Department of Transport and municipalities to provide all required support,” she said.
