Durban - Grade 12 pupils in the area of the uMngeni Local Municipality could earn themselves R7 000 each if they perform well in their final Grade 12 exams.

The municipality said it plans to present accolades to the top Grade 12 achievers in the coming final year exams.

“As part of the municipality’s ongoing prioritisation of education, the top three overall achievers within the municipal area will each receive R7 000 based on the aggregate,” it said.

The amount is part of the money the municipality has set aside in its budget to support the youth.

At the time of announcing the budget earlier this year, mayor Chris Pappas said the budget of his municipality was pro-poor.

He said to the young people of uMngeni municipality: “Today we passed a budget that is pro-poor. We were thinking about you and the future of this municipality. We have increased the youth budget from R1 million to R1.450m to be spent on youth.

“In addition to this there is another R250 000 to be spent on internships. We know that young people are looking for internships and in-service training, and for the first time in that municipality we have set aside R250 000 towards in-service training.”

He said other initiatives that formed part of the youth package was R100 000 to create wi-fi hot spots, R100 000 to support SMMEs, 100 000 towards registration fees at tertiary institutions and R100 000 for top achievers.
