Durban - Delinquent motorists could face arrest for road traffic violations in uMngeni Municipality as the council moves to strengthen law enforcement in its CBD and surrounding areas.

The municipality announced plans to install security cameras with licence plate recognition capabilities in its CBD, acquire new traffic vehicles and build a new vehicle pound.

Mayor Chris Pappas announced a raft of service delivery measures aimed at improving safety and security in the town, which are set to be implemented from next year.

“By the end of this year we will open a new traffic department and vehicle pound, which will be home to our new traffic department which will help to build the safety of our municipality.”

He said new vehicles had been purchased for the traffic unit and will arrive by the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

He said they had signed a memorandum of understanding with community safety organisations in the area, “which will help us put new CCTV cameras and licence recognition cameras in our CBD across the uMngeni region”.

Since taking over the municipality last year, the DA mayor has implemented numerous service delivery initiatives including acquiring multimillion-rand equipment for waste management at their landfill site.

Launching tourism month in the municipality recently, Pappas urged holiday markers to spend their holiday in uMngeni this festive season, pointing out that his municipality has a lot to offer.
