LETTER: Shallcross community support for ‘drug lord’ is sad

DURBAN - The Shallcross community’s affinity for shebeens and drug dens refers.

There is something seriously wrong with the Shallcross community. They did it last year and again this year: they attacked the police and prevented them from carrying out a raid on a suspected drug lord. What sort of people are they, who stop police from carrying out their lawful duties?

Police say they came under attack from an angry crowd when they went to raid a drug kingpin’s house.

Officers were assaulted and their vehicles were stoned. This is unacceptable behaviour and must be condemned strongly. Police fired warning shots to disperse the unruly mob and three people got injured in the scuffle.

Three suspects were arrested. All this was unnecessary.

I cannot believe that a community which is the first to complain of the high crime rate would attack police officers who are carrying out their lawful duties. This is unprecedented in the community and was never heard of in days gone by.

Drugs are a serious problem in our community and residents should welcome the police into their areas and help them in their fight against crime, not turn on them when they raid shebeens and drug dens.

But the Shallcross community prefers to protect a drug lord. Apparently he does a lot of good for the community and in return he is rewarded with their allegiance and protected by the mafia. But the man denies he’s a drug dealer. Which man will admit he is involved in criminal activities?

The community’s association with shebeens and drugs goes a long way back.

We always had drug pedlars and shebeens operating with impunity in our communities, only now drugs and alcohol abuse have become a menace in the sprawling township.

What comes out clearly is that we don’t mind when one of our own is engaged in criminal activities. We turn a blind eye and say “pavum (sorry), let him make a living”. Yet we are quick to condemn others.

A skewed sense of justice.
