Adelaide -

A gunman killed three neighbours then shot a police officer in the face during a shootout and siege on Friday in a normally sleepy Australian city, police said.

The 39-year-old man surrendered to police after holing up in his house with an unknown number of weapons for more than seven hours in the South Australian state capital of Adelaide.

Police commando unit officers found the bullet-ridden bodies of a woman and two men in a house next door to the man's suburban residence, Police Deputy Commissioner Gary Burn said. A teenager in the house was badly wounded in the shooting.

The man opened fire on police responding to an emergency call from the home, hitting one officer in the face, Burn said. A second officer suffered a minor knee injury.

The man has been charged with three counts of murder and one of attempted murder, Burn said. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted. - Sapa-AP
