Sydney - Australian police say a protester has scaled Sydney Harbour bridge, forcing its closure and a halt to morning traffic.

Police say in a statement a 38-year-old man used ropes to scale a span of the bridge before dawn on Friday and spent about two hours at the top before climbing down to the deck where he was arrested.

The statement says police closed the bridge to pedestrians and vehicles while they negotiated with him.

The man telephoned a radio station from the bridge to say he was protesting because government authorities were failing children whose parents separated.

Police would not comment on a television news report that the man had demanded the bridge closure.

Police say he was taken to a police station and charges are likely. - Sapa-AP
