London - A plane carrying a donor organ crashed and caught fire on landing at an airport in Britain on Friday, injuring two men on board although the body part was safely retrieved, police said.

The donor organ, reported to be a liver, was rescued from the wreckage of the Cessna plane at Birmingham Airport in central England and transported to a local hospital, police said.

A pilot from an air ambulance crew entered the burning jet to cut off its fuel supply after the accident, the ambulance service said in a statement.

One of the pilots of the plane was said to be in an extremely serious condition.

The busy airport would remain closed until at least 1200 GMT on Saturday after the crash, it said in a statement. - Sapa-AFP
