Rastatt, Germany - A 39-year-old woman was killed on a German motorway on Thursday when she was struck by a metal screw while riding in a car with her family, police said.

The family was heading south for their summer holiday when the metal scrap, described by police as a screw from a truck or trailer, was flung up off the road by another vehicle. It smashed through the windscreen and struck the woman in the head, killing her.

The accident was witnessed by the woman's children and her husband, who was driving.

One child was hit by a shard of windscreen glass. The husband, 37, and one of the children were also treated for shock. - Sapa-dpa
