Former South African political prisoners launched a campaign on Tuesday calling for the release of the Cuban Five.

The Cuban Five are political prisoners who were arrested years ago but are still in prison in the United States.

ANC deputy general secretary Thandi Modise said they were not choosing the US over Cuba but fighting for freedom.

"ANC and the former political prisoners of this country cannot turn a blind eye on Cuba. We are calling on the US to release them and we are also calling for support from the rest of the world."

The campaign called "Release the Cuban Five" would first collect signatures from former South African prisoners. Organisers would hold a march and gatherings around the country.

The campaign's national executive Vuyisile Mbumbu said they were looking at kickstarting the campaign before the beginning of September but said they had no timeframe as to how long it would take to get all the signatures nor details on the march. - Sapa
