Spanish police say an officer has been killed and another was wounded during a shootout with two men trying to rob a bank in a small northern town.

A Civil Guard spokesperson said one of the two robbers has been arrested but the second escaped.

The 6am (0400 GMT) shootout on Tuesday took place outside a bank office in the town of A Caniza, some 600 kilometres (370 miles) northwest of Madrid.

The spokesperson said police went to the scene after the bank's alarm was set off by the two men.

The official was speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with police regulations. - Sapa-AP
