London - Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher was admitted to hospital in London on Tuesday with an infection, the BBC reported.

The broadcaster quoted a spokesperson as saying her condition was “not serious” but was better treated in hospital. She is being treated at Cromwell Hospital in west London and is expected to go home in a few days, the BBC reported.

The prime minister's office in Downing Street had no immediate comment.

Last week Thatcher, 85, known as the “Iron Lady”, did not attend a party hosted by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron to celebrate her 85th birthday because she had flu.

It was not immediately clear if the infection was related to that illness.

Thatcher embraced free market policies, challenged trade unions and privatised many state-owned companies during her 11 years in power, polarising British voters. She was forced to step down by her own party in 1990.

Thatcher suffered a series of mild strokes in late 2001 and 2002, after which she cut back on public appearances and later cancelled her speaking schedule. She was taken to hospital in June 2009 when she broke her arm in a fall at her London home. - Reuters
