Caracas - A march by thousands of Venezuelans as part of the country's bicentennial celebrations has become a show of support for ailing President Hugo Chavez.

The president's red-clad supporters are holding flags and chanting “Long live Chavez!”

He is in Cuba recovering from surgery that removed a cancerous tumour.

A message on Chavez's Twitter account says he is doing his “daily exercises and receiving that bath of love” from the demonstrators in Caracas. He calls it “the best medicine”.

Sunday's march was organised as part of the country's week-long celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of its declaration of independence from Spain. - Sapa-AP
