Sanaa - Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said a defence council declared a state of emergency after gunfire killed dozens of protesters in Sanaa after Friday prayers, but said police were not involved in the violence.

“The police were not present and did not open fire. The clashes happened between citizens and demonstrators,” he told a news conference.

“It is clear there are armed elements among the demonstrators.” - Reuters
