As is the case with many new models these days, the first picture of the all-new B-Class has gone viral before the company has officially released anything, although Mercedes-Benz could well be the instigator of the leak.

What's apparent though is that while the next version of its A-Class sibling promises to be a far sexier hatch aimed at the youth market, there's really nothing to get too excited about in the case of the B-Class. In keeping with its brief to provide practical family transportation, the B-Class retains a boxy, cab-forward design with styling that's really just an evolution of today's car.

Mercedes-Benz has already released much information on the new car, which promises to be a quantum leap in the compact class.

The initial range will include an all-new direct injection, 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine, offering outputs of either 90kW/200Nm or 115kW/250Nm. There's also an all-new diesel engine in the works, this 1.8-litre unit also offering two output levels: 80kW/250Nm or 100kW/300Nm. Of course, these engines will be somewhat more efficient than the ones they replace, and further aided by an idle-stop system. On the transmission front, expect a choice between six-speed manual and a new dual-clutch transmission.

The company also promises its new family hatch will be more fun to push through corners thanks to a lower centre of gravity, new four-link rear suspension and a redesigned electromechanical steering system with 'Direct-Steer' offered as an option.

Talking options, the new B-Class will offer plenty of new gadgets, including a radar-based accident warning system with adaptive brake assist, Linguatronic, reverse camera, blind spot and lane keeping assistance systems and more.

The full reveal will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
