German tuner gives SLS a boost

The Mercedes-Benz SLS is already something of a classic in its own right, so the results of its landing in the wrong tuner's hands could be quite disastrous to say the least.

Luckily German modification specialist VÄTH seems to have done a reasonably tasteful job with its take on the SLS, with fairly subtle styling mods to go with the modest performance and acoustic enhancements.

The SLS's high-revving 6.3-litre V8 has been tuned up from 420kW to 452kW, while the torque output rises from 650Nm to 680Nm. To achieve this, VÄTH tinkered with the software and installed a high-performance exhaust system of its own design - the latter also allowing the driver to adjust the level of engine noise that enters the cabin.

The upgrades, according to VÄTH, cut the 0-100km/h sprint time down to 3.6 seconds (from 3.8) and raise the top speed from 317km/h to 330km/h.

And just in case the driver wants to live under any fantasy that he or she could go faster than that, the tuner has added a new 400km/h speedometer to go with the other subtle interior mods.

As mentioned, the tuner has kept visual mods to a minimum, the most notable change being 20-inch black rims of its own design as well as a more aerodynamic front spoiler, side skirts and boot spoiler.

Of course, the suspension has also been lowered, by 25mm.
