With the CX-7 recently given the axe, Mazda's CX-9 has been left to fly the flag as the brand's only large SUV offering.

To keep it fresh, Mazda took the wraps off an updated version at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney late last week.

It becomes the third model to bear Mazda's latest 'Kodo' family face, which it gets in addition to subtler changes at the rear and some high-tech additions inside.

These include a modern infotainment system with the latest navigation and speech-recognition systems as well as safety aids like Forward Obstruction Warning, Lane Departure Warning and High Beam Control.

There's been no tinkering under the bonnet, Mazda having carried over the old model's 203kW/367Nm 3.7-litre V6 engine, which is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

We're currently awaiting word on whether the latest CX-9 is destined for South Africa.
