Mazda is extending its seemingly never-ending barrage of MX-5 concept cars with the GT Concept, which seems like a plausible production possibility.
The world has lacked a compact screamer of a roadster ever since the Honda S2000 sadly kicked the bucket and though the Mazda can't quite match its Japanese counterpart in outright ponies, it nonetheless seems like an enticing proposition.
Inspired by Mazda's podium-winning MX-5 GT race programme and set to debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this coming weekend, the GT is shoved along by a 2-litre naturally aspirated engine that's been tuned to kick out 153kW - up from the standard MX-5's 118kW output.
AURAL TINGLE
To give the upgrade an extra aural tingle, a sports exhaust system with a central tailpipe has been fitted.
The GT's creators, Jota Sport, also threw in a modified suspension system, which can be adjusted to varying track conditions, and to give aerodynamics a boost, a carbon front splitter, rear diffuser and boot spoiler have been bolted on.
Inside, numerous items made from carbon reduce the weight of the car, while a set of Recaro seats keep the driver tightly perched.
At this stage there's no official word on whether Mazda intends to put this concept, or something similar to it, into production.
