Merc's land yacht for rock stars

What else can you possibly call a van with a full leather interior in white and pale grey, wood floor, light-sensitive polychromatic self-tinting windows (is that even street legal?), brushed aluminium and wood-veneer trim, and a sound system that'll rock your world.

Welcome aboard the Mercedes-Benz Viano Vision Pearl, a six-seater luxury limo that combines the spaciousness of a van (the Viano is basically a very large tin box with a wheel at each corner) with very special cabin decor styled like the saloon of a luxury yacht.

Sorry, fellow rock stars, this is only a show car, built for the Frankfurt motor show in September to show just what is possible in a van - although we reckon Stuttgart will get some serious enquiries once the VIP guests see this thing.

The outside is special too, with a one-off front treatment including a restyled, deeper front bumper and daylight running lights, and the van is finished in a semi-matt pebble-grey paint called “magno pearl grey”.

Travelling, said Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz vans, is no longer a means to an end. The journey is part of the experience - and it's time too valuable to be wasted sitting with your head in neutral asking yourself, “Are we there yet?”

“We wanted to show what can be done with a van,” he said. “The Viano Vision Pearl isn't just a bus, it's a stylishly designed living space with full-time wi-fi connectivity to cater for the needs of modern, mobile individuals.

“Its interior design and technical features make the Viano Vision Pearl the S-Class of vans.”

Oh yes, the sound system: created specially for this vehicle by Bang & Olufsen, the “BeoSound Viano” system pushes 1320 watts through 18 integrated, specially hand-built speakers, each in its own housing so that very little thumping is heard outside the van with the doors closed.

So, if the good ship Pearl is rocking, don't bother knocking; they won't hear you.
