The Honda NSX prototype lapped the 3.8-kilometre Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, just before the running of Sunday's Indy 200 race.

Honda R&D Americas chief engineer Ted Klaus said: "It's natural for us to showcase the prototype vehicle here at Mid-Ohio - our R&D and manufacturing teams right here in Ohio are developing a next-generation mid-engined sports car that will be equally at home on the street and on the race track, so we're excited to see the prototype running on the circuit, reflecting the progress we're making toward its 2015 global launch.”

ONE V6, THREE ELECTRIC MOTORS

The NSX has a mid-mounted, direct-injection V6 engine mated to a three-motor high-performance hybrid system - one electric motor is integrated with the V6 and dual-clutch transmission to drive the rear wheels, while the other two drive the front wheels.

The system enables torque vectoring through instant, independent delivery of either power or braking torque to the front wheels during cornering; Honda is confident this will achieve levels of driving performance unmatched by current all-wheel drive systems.

The NSX is being developed at Honda R&D Americas in Raymond, Ohio and production versions will be assembled at a new plant in nearby Marysville.
