Police in the Western Cape have arrested four men in connection with the mass murder that took place in Mfuleni on Sunday.
The incident took place at 1.30pm on Sunday, December 1.
Mfuleni police were called out to the Madikizela informal settlement and upon arrival they found the bodies of five men with gunshot wounds in a shack on the corner of Polisa and Deputy streets.
The provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa said members of the Western Cape Serious Violent Crime investigators, supported by intelligence operatives, made the arrests on Tuesday morning.
“The suspects, aged between 29 and 35, have subsequently been charged with murder and possession of illegal firearms with ammunition. They are expected to appear in court soon,” Potelwa said.
She said four firearms have also been recovered.
“As part of the same investigation, vital intelligence also led the team to a location where they recovered four firearms (a rifle and three pistols) as well as rounds of ammunition. The confiscated firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they were utilised in the commission of the Mfuleni murders or any other crime,” Potelwa said.
The arrests and seizure of firearms have been hailed by Western Cape SAPS management in efforts to curb incidents of violent crimes in the province.
“Since the occurrence of the Mfuleni multiple murders on Sunday afternoon, Western Cape police teams have been hard at work in search of the perpetrators. On Monday morning, the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile with the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the province visited the Mfuleni precinct and were briefed on the progress of the investigation,” Potelwa said.
